The Appearance of Phenotypic Characters in Varietal Cross of Cucumis melo var . makuwa Makino cv . Eunchun and Sungwhan

Abstract
Studies were conducted to obtain some basic data for breeding of oriental melon from cross between cultivars Eunchun and Sungwhan. The plant growth, net photosynthesis, fruit shape, yield and powdery mildew resistance of the F©û hybrid were compared with its parents. No difference was observed in hypocotyl length of 12-day-old seedlings. The hybrid showed larger leaves than parental plants and was intermediate in vine length, fruit length, flesh thichness and fruit weight as compared with its parents, whereas fruit shape and rind color were similar to Sungwhan. Much more fruit sets and yield were observed in the F©û hybrid. The highest net photosynthetic rate was found in Eunchun, but the F©û hybrid was the same as Sungwhan. The infection rate of powdery mildew was significantly lower in the hybrid than its parents.
